R.I.P Hobbes

I got back a few days ago..and had a very fun and exciting trip. However, Hobbes (my beloved laptop) is very sick- and I cannot afford expensive treatment (that macs are notorious for) now. I think I will have to let him go. Which is heart-breaking in itself. To make it worse, this is of course the WRONG time for a computer to die- what with thesis writing and all that fun stuff that I have lined up for me. So I got me a cheap stop-gap arrangement- a second hand Windows P.C!!! oooohhh the horror!!!! I cannot stop crying now. I never, ever, thought I would have to see this day. It's unsettling enough to have to use a different machine, but a windows computer? Aargh. I HATE this keyboard, this stupid button for a mouse, this stupid interface, this horrible O/S that took me half-an-hour to set up my internet at home. Yuck yuck yuck. I hate it all. I miss Hobbes. :'(

And I know most of the visitors to this site are users of microsoft windows, but please, save it. :p

well all is not lost... you can easily make a pc look like osx -
the free way is to try and get a computer buddy to hack your uxtheme.dll so you can run an osx type theme instead of the default theme... (or google turn pc into mac) if you can't find such an expert. it'll probably get you to a page called 'stylexp' which is a paid program with a free trial.

Other things you can download and install are:
1. objectdock by stardock (free)(looks like os x dock)
2. windows desktop search (free) (spotlight)
3. topdesk (expose replacement - this is a paid thingi but well worth it, otherwise google expose for pc and you'll get lots of links, there's a free one at sourceforge but not as good as topdesk) - you can also use good ol windows' alt-tab
4. yahoo widget engine for widgets

hope that helps.

I had a huge crush on Bill Gates! :) So, I continue to love Microsoft and Microsoft products - just can't get over this one!!!

yeah well, there are O/S besides windows, you know? ;)

S.G ki bacchi,
rehne de. abhi mera muh mat khulwa.

i don't want something that looks like a mac but underneath is running that hideous O/S!!! don't know what's worse now. I am making attempts to resusciate Hobbes.

crush on Mr. Gates? *rolls eyes* sigh. can we talk about it some other time? I'm grieving now. ;)

oh there are ways of getting os x running on a pc, as long as the components are compatible. Highly illegal, I think.

I thought you just missed the looks and the functionality of os x - those things I suggested replicate that but yeah if you want the behind the scenes stuff then only a mac will do it for you. BTW have you tried Ubuntu?

i miss both. :( :'(

btw, thanks for all the tips. nope, my lab mate raves about ubuntu...will may be perhaps give it a look see.

MS is always better. Just imagine, if you had MS laptop, then it won't have gived up on you like this. It could still be fixed. Trust and loyalty still goes ahead than being 'cool'

When we moved into our new lab, we trashed allour old comp (weird departmental request)
and so we swtiched from MAC to yikes, PC.. I totally understand what you are going through. It took me a year to adjust. And when I get paid decently .. the comp I will buy is the new powerbok :)
BTW -Ubuntu ROCKS..
Try it.
