Why attend scientific meetings?

too pollyannaish for me. i'd say the reasons are threefold:
1. meet friends
2. ensure others don't forget who you are
3. get that *one nugget* that helps your own work, which you wouldn't have got if you'd stayed at home.

any conference where you get that one nugget (objective #3) is a good one. any conference where you didn't fulfill objective #1 is a bad one.

I totally agree with Tabula Rasa. And I notice that #1 is becoming more and more important for me!
