Chicago.

Will be in Chicago for a weekend mid August. Mostly to city-see and meet up with one of my closest grad school buddies H. Suggestions invited: what to do, what not to do, etc. etc. Will probably spend a day by myself and a day with H.

I guess if I had to be more specific: Don't want to spend too much $$, don't want to do museums because of limited time. I like being outside. Want to see the city, do some touristy things but some off-beat suggestions would be nice. Am vegetarian, and also, eating will not be focus (as much as possible ;) ). No, don't want to shop and don't want to go to that desi street in as much as I've heard so much about it. This is too short a trip for that.

Thanks in advance. :)

Willis, not Sears. Going up to the SkyDeck isn't worth it if the day's crappy. I'd say Millenium Park, which has The Bean and the ridiculous Gehry amphitheatre; Magnificent Mile for the compulsive window shopper; Riverwalk if the weather's nice; Architecture Tour on the Chicago River; Subway ride to Northwestern U in Evanston.

Oh, and a trip to loverly, bucolic Urbana-Champaign.

Go to the Millenium Park in the evening... you're bound to walk into one of those free concerts in the amphitheater. Pretty cool they are. There's also an area there for flowers. The Bean is pretty close by as well.

If you don't mind being a kid for a while you could try the planetarium, it's worth a peek :)

Hey..Try visiting Oak Park, a suburb of Chicago..It has the largest collection of prairie style houses designed by Frank Llyod Wright..Also home to Earnest Hemingway (Old man and the Sea)..Pretty downtown area with small, eclectic restaurents..Trivia - On the release of last Harry Potter book, the whole village was converted into London and Hogsmead, a week long festival was held with Quidditch matches and all..The roads were full of people dressed up as wizards and witches.. I lived there for 2 years during my grad studies and miss tht pretty little village like hell..:(

An hour long cruise in the Chicago river is the best thing that I did wen i was in Chicago over the 4th july weekend. All the other places like the tower navy pier were so crowded and I was kinda losing patience with the queues everywhere..But for this cruise-I feel thats the best way you can see the Chicago downtown. Its called Wendella boats if you are interested. Its total 'paisa vasool'

Chicago feels like my city - Architecture tour, + Hancock buffet (Sears towers is passe) + Milennium Park (Bean and the water fountain) are must dos... If you want list of desi eateries... Shoot me an email... I have a whole list of desi eateries that I sent to a desi prof I was networking in an email already.. Other than that, night time jazz and Navy Pier (check out if they have fireworks in the weekend u r there n if they have it, night time in Navy Pier is also awesome)... If you still have time (which I assume you dont), David Lloyd Wright tours are a must do if you are into that kind of stuff... You mentioned no museums but the art museum wud be next on my list of must dos in Chicagoland... :)

But number 1 thing in Chi you should not miss is the Arch tour ride... if ur into the history or architecture kind of thing and looking at buildings too - the view from the boat is way better than the view u get from the roads...

PS: You are probably landing up in Chicago the first weekend I actually leave IL....
